  • Day 45 – Home away from home

It’s been a month and a half of carrying not only just my home on my back, but everything I need to survive in every type of weather the east coast can throw at me. Before I write about today I thought I would give a few fun stats on my adventure so far. Keep in mind on a hike like this it takes at least the first 2-3 weeks to get situated and settle into the very unique lifestyle. Days: 45 Average miles per day: 27 Most miles in one day: 44 Least miles in one day: 11 Average calories per day (approx): 6000 Weight lost: 13 pounds Weight left to lose: 0 Number of showers taken: 10 Number of times clothes were washed: 6 Low temperature: -15 High Temperature: 79 Today I woke up under an overpass near a state park. It is where I chose to sleep in order to avoid the possible snow storm in the middle of the night. Luckily there was a climb to the top of the ridge to begin the day and it gave me the change to get warmed up in the 30 degree weather. Up down and over many rocks of all shapes and sizes until I reached the 11 mile mark and thought how much I would enjoy coffee, breakfast and figuring out why my camera battery keeps dying. With all these factors a quick stop in town was inevitable. On the trail I don’t even follow the days of the week unless planning which day to arrive at a post office and I didn’t even realize it was the Sunday before Easter. Ironically I ended up at a small coffee/breakfast spot with a group doing a worship service. They invited me in and fed me for only the price of my stories. They were incredibly generous and great to entertain with a few minutes of stories but alas i had to keep moving north. I took a coffee to go and before I knew it, it was late afternoon. The day and the miles flew by. My theory for this is the fact that the majority of the day was spent in a thick, unchanging forest of pine trees accentuated by deciduous trees. Yes there have finally begun to pine trees in these forests. With another day of thirty plus miles I have begun to notice how perfectly adjusted to walking I have become. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 44 – Gunshots

I have never been within earshot of a battlefield but today there were gunshots, canon sounds and jets around. The military presence has definitely been felt. Last night may have been my best night of sleep on the trail. I had a shelter to myself and was thoroughly filled after eating in town. On top of that due to various reasons I had not slept well the past couple nights and it was time to makeup for it. I had no alarm and didn’t emerge from my sleeping bag until the sun was out in full force around 7 and I was thoroughly refreshed. I took the rocky trail northward. When I say rocks I do not mean pebbles. I was often climbing boulders, navigating cliffs and giant rock slabs. It was not conducive to hiking quickly. As I continued the seesaw of walking on tops of the ridges I finally dropped for good into an old mining town that used to contain 1000 people. Now there is nothing. It’s pretty amazing how once the mine died so did the town. The were giant rock piles and some old relics strewn about but overall there was little evidence of inhabitants. I managed to log a day in the low to mid thirties as far as mileage even with sleeping in. It seems in Pennsylvania I could carry just a daypack and make it into towns at least once a day with all the proximity and access roads. Tomorrow it’s on the Port Clinton. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 43 – Duncannon

Last night was not filled with sleep. Not because of animals, noise, or sickness but simply due to excruciating thirst. A day in which I ate much more processed food, pizza, and had soda instead of water at one of my meals, I was thoroughly behind on water and the half liter that I camped with would normally be more than sufficient, but under these circumstances that water was gone before my head even hit the pillow. Sleeping with an unquenched thirst is uncomfortable at best. On top of the sodium induced thirst, once I finally did fall asleep my alarm did not go off correctly and I began the day with the odds stacked against me. While forcing myself out of my zombie like state I was able to pound the trail and move quickly towards Duncannon. The trail was very mild with the exception of what one of the locals (and thru hikers) called “Turtle Rocks” which are the size of a turtle and are perfect for rolling ankles and causing immediate foot pain from the uneven and ever rolling terrain. 24 miles later I walked down the Main Street of Duncannon. With the signature white blazes leading the way. I grabbed my package from the post office and further refined my gear while also picking up a large allotment of food to bring my pack weight back up to its full potential. After my chores were done it was time to visit the iconic Doyle Hotel. It is notorious for being hiker friendly with great owners. I had a meal and a couple beers here and chatted with one of the owners: Vicky before deciding to camp at the first shelter out of town. I like to camp out of town because it removes the possibility of morning coffee and breakfast in town and keeps me in my routine that I have become so attached to. To close out the day I was treated to the most glorious sunset. Sites like these really give me perspective and remind me how fortunate I am. I also think how strange it is that on this trail that 10,000 people a year attempt to hike I am in solitude much of the time and will finish this trail before most people start their hike. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 42 – Pizza

What if I told you that there was a way to eat as much as you’d like and still lose weight. Better yet, what if I told you I was on that diet. All that is required is to walk 30 plus miles per day and beyond that you can eat whatever you want and still become an incredibly skinny person. The last couple days before I make it to my next resupply town are always interesting and very telling. Naturally I always eat the best meals first after I resupply. This means by day 4 of a stretch in the wilderness I am down to the food I either don’t like or haven’t tried before. These left over meals are usually bland beans and chips or instant mashed potatoes. As I dug into my bag today I found something different: dehydrated pizza. It is a meal my mom made and I was not so sure about it. That is until I read on the small piece of paper she wrote the instructions on to eat the meal dry. After seeing that my perspective changed and the meal turned out to be great albeit a little crunchy. Had I added water I was expecting a soggy soupy mess with a hint of pizza. Luckily this wasn’t the case and it turned out being one of my favorite lunches, especially since it didn’t require any preparation. I moved well today over the mostly flat terrain. The few exceptions to the terrain were what my map called “Rocky Mazes.” Turns out these were house sized rocks that the trail would randomly meander through, under, over and around. At mile 39 and about dinner time I hit Boiling springs, PA. I decided to splurge and get dinner in town. Turns out the only reasonable priced place was a pizzeria. I had my second pizza of the day and used self restraint to save a couple pieces for tomorrow. I walked a couple more miles before setting myself up to make it in to Duncannon tomorrow for a full resupply fresh with a few meals that will go quick and a few more that will make a home in the bottom of my food bag. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 41 – Pennsylvania

Maryland did not last long and in my journey northward I have crossed into yet another state. Pennsylvania is the next one up. I finished today with a long day reaching the mid 30s mileage wise. It sure felt a lot longer. It seemed that 1/2 the time I was navigating the rock fields that Pennsylvania is known for on the AT. In terms of continuing education, the lesson of the day was the mason Dixon line which marks the state line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. The weather was nice today, and the sun was warm. When I think I have adjusted to the warm weather rain and cold follows and then the relentless heat comes back making me adjust all over again. These are problems I welcome though. I’m not sure if others have the same problem but this time change has thrown me off. I keep looking at my watch and feeling an hour behind. Soon enough the daylong will be long enough I may not even need a watch. Hopefully the relentless crossing of roads through Pennsylvania eventually subsides and I can be immersed in the wilderness once again. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 40 – Maryland

Virginia took countless days. West Virginia was less than a day and Maryland will be just over a day. It’s roughly 40 mile interaction with the trail has been full of nearly completely flat trail with a couple incredible views accompanied by multiple busy roads, freeways, and history. The mix of Civil War and Revolutionary war monument has given me more history over the past couple days than I ever learned in school. There is just something about walking in the footsteps of legends and being immersed in the same country side that those fighting incredible battles also walked through with packs on their backs. Today the highlight was not a monument or memorial. It was the Annapolis rocks. Not only were the rocks great (pictures to come) but I arrived just at the moment the sun finally broke through the clouds. It was one of those gut wrenching moments where you realize how small you really are. From here I walked a couple hours and settled for a day somewhere in the high 20s mileage wise. I also met the well known thru hiker who is southbounding the Appalachian trail after starting in December. Tomorrow I should be done with Maryland and on to the infamously rocky Pennsylvania. Lastly, I am so close to the halfway point I can almost taste it, and it taste like dirt. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 39 – Harpers Ferry

Waking up in a wet sleeping bag is like waking up soaked in sweat but imagine that instead of sweat it is cold water. Throughout the night I seemed to incoherently find the few warm pockets of the damp bag and sleep ok during the few hours I had allotted to sleep. When the alarm went off, I popped up and began readying my pack for the final ascent into Harpers Ferry. The miles flew by and were only interrupted by feasting on my last candy bar and last sleeve of ritz crackers. Since I was hoping to make it to town by mid afternoon I did not take the time to come up with a lunch plan. I would use the hunger as motivation! The sight of arriving in Harpers Ferry with giant rivers all around was glorious. Only surpassed by the signs pointing toward the Appalachian Trail Coalition headquarters. This is where every hiker gets their picture taken and they are then placed into that years album. I was able to find many people I knew who had thru hiked the trail in past years. It was overall a great experience and a can’t miss when passing through. For the first time in 600 miles I am staying in a hostel tonight. I figure I would stay in town, get a shower and also do laundry that was way overdue. Tomorrow I should hit Maryland and then in another day I will be on Northward and into Pennsylvania. With this being my first long distance hike that stretches more than 3 states, the celebration of a new one is not quite as pronounced; but I will say Virginia seemed to last forever. It was beautiful but also difficult in spots. I had temperatures ranging from the single digits up to the 70s. Elevations from the 1000s up to 6000. There were wild horses, great mountains and unique towns. But it’s time to leave yet another state behind and I am not mad. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 37 – A day in the life

Today was for the most part a normal day of waking the rolling hills of Shenandoah National Park. Here is how my day looks:6 – wake up and begin to pack up 615 – nature calls 625 – pull breakfast out of pack (tram bar from Kate’s Real food, poptart and fruit snack) then start walking and eat breakfast while hiking 7 – schedule blog post from top of first hill 815 – Eat shortbread cookies and fruit snacks from pack 930 – Sit down on rock outcropping and eat cookies and crackers 10 – Eat a Snickers from pocket while hiking 1015 – eat ritz crackers from pocket while hiking 1115 – smell the scent of the first day hikers 1120 – see the first day hikers 1 – Sit down for a short break and eat cookies and bar 315 – Short break and begin eating a whole box of cheezits 430 – short break to have water 6 – cook and eat dinner 1 (beans and instant rice, cook and pack up dinner 2 (seasoned beans) 8 – eat dinner 2 and look for a camp spot 845 – set up camp and write journal 10 – post journal and go to sleep Well that is my basic schedule. It really is the simple life. • Day 36 – Cowboy camping

Two quick notes before I describe another great day in the wild. First, I will be starting to use snapchat to show some of the finer points of thru hiking and what I am doing in general. I noticed lots of the things people ask about don’t always make it into my pictures so I figured snapchat might be a good medium to start using (username: jgar15). Second, tomorrow instead of my usual post I will try to note things throughout the day and put up a “day in the life” type post to give all of you a better idea how my days go. As usual I was on the trail by 7 today and did a decent job balancing eating, walking, and thinking. Which ironically are the three tasks that I am best at. Being in a national park I figured I would see many more people making use of it during this string of 70 degree weather, but for the most part I have the foot wide highway to myself. I have seen less than a dozen people on the trail in Shenandoah. I took a long break for lunch and snacked heavily to fill my food void. Luckily being only two days from leaving town gives me this luxury. Recently I have adopted a new eating schedule as well. I eat a few bars for breakfast and heavily snack all day and then have two dinners. One of the two dinners is of course the food allotted for that days lunch. Since I only cook once a day, and I have grown somewhat sick of slimy cold bean centered lunches, I decided to try meals of the hot bean variety. They are exponentially better. As I neared the closed campground where I intended to camp, the darkness had fully set in and I could see pairs of eyes staring back at me from deep in the forest. We are not talking about just one pair of eyes, I counted over a dozen pairs. Once in a while I would stop and stare into the woods trying to discern what that leering eyes belonged to but I could see nothing. At one steep section there were no eyes but there was a strange sound from below that was a mix between a cow moo, an owl who, and a mountain lion whine. Although I stopped to find the origin of this sound I was unsuccessful here too. In the end I got to the closed and desolate campground, threw out a tarp and am laying out in the open air staring at the stars just hoping no Rangers crash my party. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 35 – more magic

I didn’t walk long miles and nothing extraordinary happened, but today was just a great day. Starting off with 4 slices of French toast from a trail angel should be how I begin every day. From here I threw on my pack and walked into the Shenandoah National Park. I walked the first 7 miles with the trail angel, Nana. Then we split ways and what I was doing sunk in. Not that I am hiking 7500 miles over 8-9 months, not that I left a career and friends behind, but that I am getting to do something that I enjoy every single day. I have the chance to accomplish a dream. It was a heavy moment that was appropriately celebrated with a pop tart. I climbed through the national park, i crossed ridges and valleys and at the end of the day I was much less productive than I anticipated. It must have been the all you can eat buffet of last night weighing me down. In the end I camped near a hut in the park with a large group of George Mason students. I was able to trade stories for a second dinner as well as chocolate cake. It was amazing. In the end it was only a 21 mile day, but it feels like I really filled up those 21 miles well. I’m sure tomorrow I will be back into the rhythm of trail life after waking up in the woods. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 34 – The best trail magic

The low after doing my longest day of the trip to date was a little lower than I was hoping. My feet were tired. I was tired and I was not ready to embrace the remaining 23 miles in to my resupply. As I’ve said before, any point above 13-15 miles into a town is tough. It means I eat lunch on the trail as well as consume snacks throughout the day but my mind is on the town stop. It also means I need to push pretty hard to make sure I arrive at the post office before it closes. Today all these factors were in play. I toddled along through the ups and down, over knobs and under logs and even crossed my old friend: the Blue Ridge Parkway. I have followed this scenic road for 100 miles. After crossing it I took a break and what to my wondering eyes should appear? A naked old man in a day pack and sandles strolling through the wilderness. I was thoroughly confused especially as it seemed there were many day hikers out and about in the area. The man looked like he could have lived out there and in the 70 degree weather he was dressed for it. From here I didn’t let my pack touch the ground and flew through the miles. Eventually I reached rockfish gap and began the hitch into town. Right away I had a lady that went by Nana pick me up. We struggled through finding the post office together and eventually arrived. She hinted at helping me out beyond the ride but in being out of society and in the woods I did not pick up on it. I followed up the post office with an all you can eat buffet. It was very average, but I took full advantage. So much so in fact that I got politely pushed to end my dominance of the buffet. After two hours of continual eating (over 9 full plates) the waiter came up with the check while I was still eating and asked if I would like to leave. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that saved me from the overeating disease that has ravaged this country. I waddled to the YMCA where I got a free shower and saw my trail angel Nana again. From here she invited me to come stay in her spare room in the nearby Crozet instead of camping in the YMCA field. It was amazing. A sheer stroke of kindness from a wonderful lady. She brought me into her home and was an amazing host, even offering French toast in the morning. From someone who may have all but lost faith in humanity, people like Nana really help bring me back to optimism and appreciation of how many great people are really out there. The trail is a giving place and will always provide. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking

  • Day 33 – Real Sunshine

Even waking up I just knew it was going to be a good day. I felt good, well rested and I was ready to start pounding trail. I had 67 miles to get to my next town stop and I wanted to try to make it in a day and a half if my body was feeling up to it. The day started pleasant and heated up very quickly. At 10 I passed Brown mountain creek and decided to give the frigid water a tray. My legs were frozen instantly from the snowmelt, but it was refreshing nonetheless. Shortly after this shock of ice water I began the steep climb up Bald Knob. In places it was so steep my heals didn’t even touch the ground on each step. It was an instant calf workout and another step in my body sculpting process. I ran out of water well before the top and slowed drastically on the climbing. Luckily I met some men doing trail maintenance and I took it as an excuse to stop and thank them for their work. I try to make a point to give all the volunteers around every long trail a thank you at the very least because without them it would be much harder to do big miles since hurdling a log every five minutes would not only slow me down but kill my confidence after the first fall. After the peak of bald mountain my parched mouth prayed for water so I took drastic measures. Against my usual style I went over half a mile off the trail towards a spring to fend off dehydration. It was well worth it. The rest of the day was never flat. Either up or down but the trail never settled. That coupled with a 75 degree day had me panting like an out of shape hiker. I think I am just not in summer hiking shape. Put me in -15 degree weather with snow and that is where I shine right now. This hot weather will take some getting used to. I closed out the day hard and did a bit of night hiking to reach my biggest day of the trip to day: 44 miles. This means I should only have an easy 24 miler to accomplish before 5pm in order to get my resupply package from town. Another box with the same bland dehydrated food. But I can’t say too much because that bland food carried me 44 miles today. #thruhikingtriplecrown #hikingtriplecrown #howtogothruhiking #calendaryeartriplecrown #backpacking #pacificcresttrail #whatisthetriplecrownofbackpacking #Appalachiantrailinthewinter #thruhikingtheat #whentohikethatAppalachiantrail #appalachiantrail #backpackingcalendaryeartriplecrown #continentaldividetrail #whohasthruhikedtheAppalachiantrailinthewinter #backpackingtriplecrown #thruhikingtheCDT #jeffgarmire #freeoutside #howmanytriplecrownersarethere #thruhikingthepct #hikingtheatinthewinter #whatisthehikingtriplecrown #whatisthecalendaryeartriplecrown #triplecrown #hiking #thruhiking #triplecrowninoneyear #whatisthruhiking
